2 Microgreens- quick and fresh greens!

Microgreens are tiny plants of almost any vegetable variety you like. They are not sprouts, but are tiny seedlings between 10-14 days old.

Here is what you'll need:

  • A tray or container at least 2-3 inches deep. Any container that holds the soil together and can wash out excess water can be your planter, e.g. old drawers, take-away food containers, used soda bottles, egg cartons, etc.

  • A drill or some other tool you can make holes with (depends on the material of your container)

  • Enough soil to fill your container, e.g. 2 parts of coco soil to 1 part of any manure, such as home compost or vermicompost.

  • Seeds of your choice: Use organic seeds. If you can’t find them, you can use treated seeds as well. Treated seeds should be washed before use. For faster and reliable germination, you can soak the seeds overnight. This also helps to remove all surface chemicals from the seeds.

  • Water

4 Planting the seeds

Fill your tray with soil.

Then scatter or broadcast the seeds and gently cover them with soil.

The seeds for microgreens are the same as the regular vegetable seeds.

5 Taking care of the baby plants

Water thoroughly and ensure the soil is moist at all times.

You should keep the tray in the sunniest window or balcony of your house.

Protect the tray from birds by using a mesh cover (even a fruit mesh will do, if your container is small) or by hanging CDs as reflectors.

6 Harvesting your microgreens

After 2-3 days the seeds will start to germinate.

After around 7-10 days, uproot all the seedlings, wash and toss them into a delicious salad, sandwich or soup.
