Introduction: Systems of Linear Equations - Part 2

4The age of the parents as equations

Tina's parents gave her good hints to make two equations.

Father: "If you double my age and add half of your mother's age to her age, that adds up to 150 years."

First, Tina defines some variables.

  • m =^m\ \widehat{=} age of the mother

  • v =^v\ \widehat{=} age of the father

From the father's statement, Tina gets the first equation:

  • Double the father's age: 2v2v

  • Add half to the mother's age: m+0,5m=1,5mm+0{,}5m=1{,}5m

I2v+1,5m=150\mathrm{I}\qquad2v+1{,}5m=150

Mother: "If you add three years to my age and subtract two years from your father's, we are the same age!"

  • Add 33 to the mother's age:m+3\quad m+3

  • Subtract 22 from the father's age: v2\qquad v-2

IIm+3=v2\mathrm{II} \qquad m+3= v-2
